Bookstores of San Francisco

I write the Same Page SF newsletter each week, so I’m familiar with our city’s vibrant bookstore scene! Even so, collecting every detail was a labor of love. The information comes from a combination of store websites and social media, my own visits, and - what I’m most proud of - testimonials and quotes from Same Page readers.

Good question! After missing one too many literary events I only learned about after the fact, I started the Same Page SF newsletter to inform, connect, and inspire our city’s readers. Today, it’s a trusted resource for weekly happenings across our 40+ bookstores - but, taking a step back, I wanted readers to have a way to reference each of those bookstores. My hope is that you’ll be overwhelmed - in the best way! - by the diversity, range, and expertise these stores have to offer.

I chose to include all shops in San Francisco proper that are primarily if not exclusively known for selling books. There are plenty of wonderful stores that have books for sale - Amoeba Music, Cafe Suspiro, Heath Newsstand, and more - but they’re not currently part of this database. I also drew the line at brick-and-mortar stores versus online or pop-up sellers.
